What should be done to improve rule of law in the crucial year for Serbia's advancement on the path towards European Union?

Presenting prEUgovor Alarm Report on the State of Rule of Law in Serbia

Coalition prEUgovor will present its latest Alarm - the report on Serbia’s progress in implementation of policies in the areas covered by chapters 23 and 24 of the EU accession negotiations on Thursday, October 25, 2018, starting at 11am in Media Centre (1st floor, Terazije 3, Belgrade).

The year 2018 appears to be crucial for Serbia’s progress on its European path. The EU’s Western Balkans Strategy announced the possible date of Serbia's membership, as well as a series of new initiatives to improve the rule of law. During this year the debate on constitutional reform has been taking place, as a prerequisite for independent judiciary, and the adoption of new national strategies related to security is under way. Moreover, the Government of Serbia is expected to adopt new revised versions of Action Plans for Chapters 23 and 24 by the end of this year, which is why this is the perfect opportunity to substantially improve these two strategic documents in order to achieve better results.

On the other hand, the prEUgovor Alarm’s findings unequivocally point to the fact that Serbia is not doing enough in order to make progress in priority areas. These include the fight against corruption and organised crime, or ensuring protection of the rights of those who are most vulnerable. The key question that will be addressed at the conference is what needs to be done in order to improve the rule of law in Serbia, especially when considering lack of positive impact of the ongoing reforms, which is the topic of prEUgovor Alarm reports.

Speakers at the conference:

Moderator: Bojan Elek, Belgrade Centre for Security Policy
