There were 62 attacks on protestors in 71 days, from late November to the end of January. Violent incidents and attacks on students and citizens peacefully protesting and paying tribute to the victims of the fall of the canopy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024 threatened the safety of the protestors, further deepened distrust in institutions and encouraged the expansion and multiplication of protest gatherings.
In our new visual, see when, where and how the safety of participants in protests and blockades was threatened from November 22, 2024 to January 31, 2025.
The initial event for mapping was November 22, when a group of persons attacked the students of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade who were paying tribute to the victims of the canopy fall. The prosecution of all attackers and the removal from public function, for those attackers who had one, became one of the demands of the students.
Attacks have since been recorded in 11 cities and towns throughout Serbia, but mostly in Belgrade (35) and Novi Sad (17). Only on 29 November, there were 7 attacks in 6 cities.
As the protests spread, the number of attacks increases every month. More than half of all listed attacks happened in January. The most common type of incident is a car running into protest participants.
